Shopify speed optimisation

A slow store costs you visitors and ad budget. We review your theme, apps and images and improve your mobile and desktop performance on Google's Core Web Vitals.

Core Web Vitals in plain English

The three core metrics Google uses to measure page experience, and what they mean.

  • LCP: main content loading

How long it takes for the largest image or block of text to appear. Usually it's the hero banner or the product image.

  • INP: responsiveness

How quickly the page responds when you tap a button. Heavy app code makes this slower.

  • CLS: layout shift

Elements jumping around while the page loads. Images without dimensions and late pop-ups are the usual causes.

What we do

The scope of a speed project.

Images3
  • Resizing and compressing images
  • Modern formats and correct size attributes
  • Lazy loading for off-screen images
Code3
  • Minifying JS and CSS in the theme where possible
  • Removing unused CSS and JS
  • Fewer HTTP requests and less blocking
Apps3
  • Removing apps you don't need
  • Cleaning up code left behind by removed apps
  • Lighter alternatives to heavy apps

Load the hero image first, defer the rest

We load the main image on the first screen with priority and hold back images further down the page until the visitor gets there. Shopify's image_tag filter generates the right sizes and srcset on its own.

What slows stores down the most

The causes we see most often in our audits.

  1. 01Apps you no longer use whose code is still in the theme
  2. 02Large autoplay videos and sliders on the homepage
  3. 03Uncompressed images uploaded straight from a phone
  4. 04Several tracking pixels doing the same job
  5. 05Pop-ups that open as soon as the page loads

The effect of optimisation

Before

Before

  • The hero image appears late on mobile
  • Buttons are slow to respond
  • Content jumps down while the page loads
  • Visitors from ads leave before the page opens

After

After

  • The hero image loads with priority
  • Shorter response times with unused code removed
  • Space reserved for images, so nothing shifts
  • Results tracked in PageSpeed Insights and Search Console

Real user experience, not just a score

Lab scores point the way, but the data Google uses is field data collected from real users. Our reports show both.

Frequently asked questions

Can't find the answer you're looking for? Get in touch directly.

Can I get a 100/100 score?

We work to raise the score, but scoring 100 on every page without removing the apps your store needs isn't realistic. The real goal is a fast experience for real users.

Do I need to change my theme?

Usually not. If you're on an old, heavy theme, the audit also looks at what moving to an Online Store 2.0 theme would gain you.

Will you remove my apps?

We never remove an app without your approval. We report the impact of each app and make recommendations.

Does speed affect SEO?

Yes. Page experience is one of the signals Google looks at, and faster pages lose fewer visitors.

How is pricing worked out?

We quote for your scope after reviewing your theme and app setup. The first audit is free.
