Migrate to Shopify

Import products to Shopify from Excel, CSV and XML

If your product list lives in an Excel file, a supplier XML feed or a CSV exported from another system, we convert it to Shopify's product format and import it complete with variants, images and stock. No entering products one by one in a new store.

The files we work with

Whatever the source, the goal is the same: clean product data that Shopify reads correctly.

  • Excel lists

Your own product spreadsheets. Whatever the column names and layout, we map them to Shopify fields.

  • CSV files

Exports from another platform or your ERP.

  • XML feeds

Supplier and dealer XML feeds, with products, variants, stock and image links.

  • Google Sheets

Spreadsheets your team shares, for regular updates.

  • Supplier feed URLs

Feed addresses that update stock and prices at set intervals.

  • Image folders

Images named by product code, matched to the right products.

A sample of Shopify's product CSV structure

Shopify imports products using its own CSV template. Each variant is a separate row, and rows for the same product share the same Handle. We convert your file to this structure; the rows below are just an example.

What happens during the import

Rather than uploading the file as it is, we clean it, fill the gaps and verify it on a test store first.

Moves over

  • Product names, descriptions and brands
  • Variant options, SKUs and barcodes
  • Stock levels and prices
  • Images and image order
  • Categories, collections and tags
  • SEO titles and descriptions

Stays behind

  • Information that isn't in the file (we list what's missing)
  • Faulty or duplicate rows (removed with your approval)

  • Collection and filter structure
  • Metafields and product spec tables
  • Automation, if regular feed updates are needed

The problems we find most often in files

From our pre-import checklist.

Variants3
  • Each size entered as a separate product
  • Inconsistent spelling of colour and size names
  • Variants without SKUs
Images3
  • Broken or expired image links
  • Low-resolution images
  • Images not matched to variants
Text3
  • Broken HTML and special characters
  • Character encoding problems
  • Duplicate or empty descriptions
Categories3
  • Category data as a flat list
  • Several categories per product
  • Filterable attributes merged into one column

Not a one-off, but always up to date

If your supplier sends a regular XML feed or spreadsheet, updating stock and prices by hand takes time and invites mistakes. With import apps such as Matrixify or a custom integration, we have the file read at set intervals and applied to Shopify.

  • Scheduled stock and price updates
  • New products added as drafts
  • Sold-out products hidden automatically
  • Alerts when something goes wrong

Matrixify vs Shopify's own importer

For small catalogues, the CSV import in the Shopify admin may be enough. For large catalogues, Excel files, metafields and scheduled updates, we use apps like Matrixify. We recommend the right option after reviewing your file.

Questions about importing products from Excel and XML

Can't find the answer you're looking for? Get in touch directly.

Can I upload my Excel file straight to Shopify?

The Shopify admin imports products using its own CSV template, so an Excel file needs converting to that template. Apps like Matrixify can read Excel files directly.

Can I connect my supplier's XML feed to Shopify?

Yes. We map the fields in the XML to Shopify product fields and import them, and can set it to update automatically at set intervals.

How do you import images?

From the image links in the file, or from a folder of images named by product code. We list any links that can't be reached.

Can multi-language product data be imported?

Yes. Once products are imported in the main language, translations can be uploaded separately into Shopify's translation structure.

Will the products in my current Shopify store be affected?

No. We run the import in a test environment or as drafts first, and publish after your approval.
