How to Run Facebook and Instagram Ads for a Shopify Store

Meta ads, on Facebook and Instagram, are one of the main ways Shopify stores find new customers. The platform is very good at finding buyers, provided you give it accurate data, a clear objective and strong creative. This guide covers the setup and the decisions that matter.

1. Connect Shopify to Meta properly

  1. Install the Facebook & Instagram app by Meta in Shopify.
  2. Connect your Business Manager, ad account, Page and Instagram account.
  3. Set data sharing to the highest level available. This sends events through both the browser pixel and the Conversions API, which recovers events lost to browser restrictions.
  4. Let the app sync your catalogue for dynamic and shopping ads.
  5. Verify your domain in Meta Business settings.

Check in Events Manager that ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout and Purchase events arrive, with values and currency.

2. Choose the right campaign

  • Sales objective optimised for purchases: the default for stores.
  • Advantage+ sales campaigns (Meta's automated sales campaigns): the system handles much of the targeting and placement. Often a strong option once you have enough purchase data.
  • Catalogue (dynamic) ads: show each person the products they viewed or similar ones. Ideal for retargeting.
  • Awareness or traffic campaigns: useful in specific cases, but they don't optimise for buyers.

3. Keep the structure simple

Fewer campaigns with more budget each learn faster. A common starting structure:

CampaignAudienceCreative
ProspectingBroad, or interests close to your product3–5 different concepts
RetargetingVisitors, add-to-carts, engaged usersCatalogue ads, reviews, offers

4. Creative is the biggest lever

With broad targeting, the ad itself determines who sees it. Test distinct concepts: demos, reviews, problem and solution, founder stories. Our nine ad ideas are a good starting point.

5. Budget and patience

  • Avoid large changes to budgets or ads every day; each change restarts learning.
  • Increase budgets gradually on what's working.
  • Turn off ads that clearly underperform after a fair test.

6. Measure what matters

  • Cost per purchase and return on ad spend, by campaign
  • New customer share, compared with returning customers
  • Shopify's sales by channel and total revenue trends, not only Meta's attribution

7. Make the landing page match

An ad for a specific product should land on that product, with the same offer visible. Slow pages and mismatched messages waste paid clicks. See our speed guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much budget do I need to start?

Enough for the campaign to get regular purchase events, so it can learn. A small daily budget focused on one campaign usually learns faster than the same money split across many.

Why don't Meta's purchase numbers match Shopify?

They measure differently: Meta attributes purchases to ad views and clicks within a window, and consent choices limit tracking. Compare trends over time and use Shopify's sales as the source of truth.

Should I boost posts or use Ads Manager?

Boosting is quick but has few options. For sales, create campaigns in Ads Manager with a purchase objective.
