People put off decisions. A limited-time offer gives them a reason to decide now, which is why it is one of the most effective tools in ecommerce. Used carelessly, it trains customers to wait for the next sale and makes the brand look desperate. The difference lies in planning.
Types of limited-time offers
- Percentage or fixed discount for a set period
- Free shipping for a weekend
- Gift with purchase while stock lasts
- Bundle price available for a limited time
- Early access for subscribers or loyal customers
- Launch pricing for a new product
Non-discount offers, such as gifts, free shipping and early access, protect your price image better than constant percentage cuts.
Plan it in five steps
- Set a goal: clear old stock, launch a product, win back lapsed customers, raise order value.
- Choose the offer that serves that goal, and check the margin.
- Pick the timing: payday, seasonal moments, your brand's anniversary.
- Prepare the message: what, how much, until when, for whom.
- Plan the channels: email, SMS, social, announcement bar, ads.
Setting it up in Shopify
- Go to Discounts → Create discount and choose the type: amount off products, amount off order, buy X get Y, or free shipping.
- Choose a code or an automatic discount.
- Set start and end dates so it switches on and off by itself.
- Decide which other discounts it can combine with.
- Add an announcement bar or banner with the end date, and remove it when the offer ends.
Communicate the deadline honestly
- State the exact end date and time, with the time zone if you sell internationally.
- Send a reminder shortly before the end, which is often the busiest moment.
- When it ends, end it. Extending "by popular demand" every time teaches customers deadlines don't matter.
- Avoid fake scarcity: "only 2 left" must be true.
In the EU and UK, reference prices in sale claims must follow price indication rules. Check the rules for the markets you sell to.
How often?
Build a calendar with a few planned moments a year rather than permanent promotions. Between them, give customers reasons to buy at full price: new products, content, service. See our guide to planning ecommerce promotions.
Measure the real result
Compare revenue and profit during the offer with a normal period, and look at the weeks after it. If sales dip afterwards, part of the offer simply moved demand earlier. Track new versus returning customers too.

Frequently asked questions
Are countdown timers a good idea?
Only if the deadline is real. Timers that reset for every visitor are misleading, can break consumer protection rules in some countries and damage trust.
How long should a limited-time offer last?
Long enough for your audience to see it, short enough to feel urgent. Two to seven days is common; flash sales can be 24 to 48 hours.
Can I schedule a sale in advance in Shopify?
Yes. When you create a discount, set a start and end date and time. Automatic discounts apply without a code during that period.
