Live Chat for Online Stores: Options and How to Choose

Shoppers often have one small question standing between them and a purchase: will it fit, will it arrive by Friday, does it work with what they already have? Live chat lets them ask at that moment. Handled well, it raises conversion and cuts the number of emails and returns.

The main types of chat tools

TypeExamplesGood for
Shopify's own chatShopify InboxSmall stores that want something simple and free, managed in the Shopify admin and mobile app
Helpdesk with chatGorgias, Zendesk, Re:amazeTeams handling chat, email and social messages in one inbox, with order data beside each conversation
Messaging appsWhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram DMsMarkets where customers prefer messaging; conversations continue on the customer's phone
Marketing-led chatTools combining chat, pop-ups and automationStores that also want to capture leads and run automated messages

For WhatsApp specifically, see our guides to taking orders on WhatsApp and the WhatsApp Business account.

What to look for

  • Order context: can the agent see the customer's orders and cart without switching screens?
  • Speed impact: does the widget load lazily?
  • Mobile apps so you can reply away from a desk.
  • Saved replies for the questions you answer every day.
  • Offline handling: away messages and a way to leave contact details.
  • Languages, if you sell in more than one market.
  • Reporting: response times, volume, and ideally which chats led to orders.

Where chat makes the biggest difference

  • Product pages for items with sizing, compatibility or customisation questions
  • Higher-priced products where shoppers need reassurance
  • Cart and shipping questions before checkout
  • After purchase: order status and changes

Running chat well

  1. Reply fast. A quick first answer, even "let me check that for you", keeps the shopper engaged.
  2. Be clear about hours. Show them on the widget and in the away message.
  3. Link to products and help pages rather than typing long explanations.
  4. Learn from chats. If the same question comes up often, the answer belongs on the product page or in an FAQ.
  5. Don't interrupt. Auto-opening chat windows the moment a page loads annoy more people than they help.

Adding chat to Shopify

Most chat tools install as Shopify apps and add their widget through a theme app embed, which you switch on in the theme editor under App embeds. That keeps theme code clean and makes it easy to turn the widget off.

Frequently asked questions

Does live chat slow down my store?

Chat widgets add scripts, so they can. Choose a tool that loads its widget lazily or only after the page has loaded, and check your speed before and after installing.

Do I need someone online all the time?

No. Show your hours, set an away message, and let shoppers leave a message or email address outside those hours. Answering quickly when you are online matters more than being online around the clock.

Should I use a chatbot?

A bot can answer simple, repeated questions such as order tracking or shipping times. Make it easy to reach a person for anything else.
