Selling Candles Online: Costs, Pricing and How to Stand Out

Candles are a popular first product: materials are easy to find, the product photographs well and it makes a natural gift. That's also why the market is crowded. Succeeding takes careful costing, safe products and a brand people remember.

1. Work out your real cost per candle

Include every component, not just wax:

  • wax, wick and fragrance oil (by weight per candle)
  • vessel or jar, lid, labels
  • packaging, inserts and protective filling
  • a share of equipment, testing and wasted batches
  • your time, if you want the business to pay you

Then add costs per order: payment fees, shipping materials and any shipping you don't charge the customer.

2. Price for profit

A common starting point for handmade goods is to aim for a retail price several times your material cost, so there's room for marketing, wholesale and discounts. Check competitors at your quality level, then use our profit calculator to see what you keep per order. If the numbers only work with no advertising, the price is too low.

3. Make it safe and compliant

  • Test burn every scent and vessel combination: tunnelling, flame height, soot, jar temperature.
  • Add safety instructions: never leave unattended, keep away from children and pets, trim the wick.
  • Check fragrance labelling rules where you sell. In the EU and UK, chemical labelling rules can apply to scented candles and wax melts.
  • Check product liability insurance for your business.

4. Find your angle

"Hand-poured soy candles" describes thousands of shops. Stand out with a clear idea:

  • a theme (books, places, seasons, moods)
  • an audience (new homeowners, wellness, gifting)
  • a format (refills, reusable vessels, candle subscriptions)
  • a material or production story you can stand behind

5. Package and ship carefully

  • Protect glass with snug inserts; test with a drop test.
  • Consider heat in summer: soft wax can deform in transit.
  • Make unboxing part of the gift: a card, a care guide, tidy wrapping.

6. Sell and grow

  • Photos that show the candle lit, in a room, and at scale.
  • Scent descriptions with notes and the mood they suit.
  • Bundles and gift sets for higher order values.
  • Seasonal collections planned months ahead.
  • Email for launches and refills (email marketing guide).
  • Wholesale to local shops once retail is working.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I earn selling candles?

It depends entirely on your margin per candle and how many you sell, which depends on your brand and marketing. Work out your profit per order first, then estimate how many orders your marketing can realistically bring.

Do candles need safety labels?

In many markets, yes. In the EU and UK, candles commonly carry safety warnings and, depending on fragrance ingredients, hazard labelling under chemical regulations. Check the rules for every country you sell to.

Can I ship candles internationally?

Usually, but check carrier rules, protect them from heat and breakage, and factor in duties and longer delivery times.
