You launched the store, added products and connected your domain, but searching Google for your own brand name returns nothing. This is rarely a penalty or "bad SEO". Most of the time it's a skipped technical step. Work through the checks below in order: a single blocker near the top makes everything after it pointless.
Start with a site: search
Search Google for site:yourdomain.com. If results appear, your site is indexed and the issue is ranking, so skip to the last sections. If nothing appears, Google hasn't indexed the store yet or something is blocking it. Google Search Console will tell you which.
1. Is the password page off?
This is the number one reason new Shopify stores are invisible. With a storefront password on, Google only sees the password page.
- Go to Online Store > Preferences, find Password protection, remove the password and save.
- During the free trial the password page stays on; you need to pick a plan before you can remove it.
2. Is anything blocking search engines?
- noindex tags: some themes, SEO apps or old developer edits add
noindexto pages. Search the page source fornoindex, or use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console. - robots.txt: Shopify creates a default robots.txt that already blocks pages such as cart, checkout and account. If someone edited
robots.txt.liquid, make sure product and collection URLs aren't blocked: checkyourdomain.com/robots.txt.
3. Set up Search Console and submit your sitemap
- Open Google Search Console and add your domain. A Domain property is verified with a DNS record; a URL-prefix property can use an HTML tag placed inside
<head>in your theme'stheme.liquid. - Under Sitemaps, submit
sitemap.xml. Shopify generates it automatically and updates it whenever you add a product, collection, page or blog post. - Use URL Inspection on your homepage and a few key collections, then click Request indexing.
For a full walkthrough, see how to submit your website to search engines.
4. Is your domain set up correctly?
It's normal for the store to open on both store.myshopify.com and your own domain. What matters is that your own domain is set as the primary domain, so Shopify redirects everything else to it. Check under Settings > Domains, and see connecting a domain to Shopify if you need the steps.
5. Read the Search Console statuses correctly
The Indexing > Pages report lists pages that aren't indexed and why. The most common ones on Shopify:
- Discovered - currently not indexed: Google knows the URL but hasn't crawled it yet. Normal for new sites. If it lasts, strengthen internal links: clear links from the homepage to collections and from collections to products.
- Crawled - currently not indexed: Google read the page and chose not to index it for now. Usually thin or supplier-copied descriptions, near-identical product pages or empty collections.
- Alternate page with proper canonical tag: Shopify products also open at URLs inside collections, and those point to the main product URL as canonical. Not an error.
- Blocked by robots.txt: expected for cart, checkout and search pages. If you see products or collections here, check your robots.txt edits.
- Not found (404): after migrating from another platform, old URLs may not be redirected. Add 301 redirects under Online Store > Navigation > URL redirects.
6. Indexed but not ranking
If your pages show up in a site: search but not for the terms you care about, the problem is no longer technical. It's SEO:
- Write collection and product titles and descriptions that use the words people actually search for, instead of the supplier's text.
- Edit each product's search title and description under Search engine listing at the bottom of the product page.
- Add descriptive alt text to images.
- Publish articles that answer your customers' questions and link them to the relevant collections.

How long should you wait?
Once nothing is blocking the store and the sitemap is submitted, the first pages are usually indexed within days, sometimes a few weeks. Google doesn't give a fixed timeline. Getting indexed and ranking for competitive searches are different things; the second takes content, internal links and time.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for a new Shopify store to appear on Google?
There's no fixed time. With nothing blocking it and a sitemap submitted in Search Console, the first pages are usually indexed within days to a few weeks. Ranking for competitive searches takes longer and depends on content and links.
Where is my Shopify sitemap?
Shopify generates and updates it automatically at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. It links to separate sitemaps for products, collections, blogs and pages.
What does 'Discovered - currently not indexed' mean?
Google knows the URL but hasn't crawled it yet, often because of weak internal linking, many similar pages or a new site. 'Crawled - currently not indexed' means Google read the page and chose not to index it for now, usually because of thin or duplicated content.
Why aren't product URLs inside collections indexed?
In Shopify a product opens at both /products/product-name and /collections/collection/products/product-name. The second URL's canonical points to the first, so 'Alternate page with proper canonical tag' in Search Console is expected and not a problem.
