Growth and visibility
Shopify GEO
Shoppers now get product recommendations from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers too. With GEO (generative engine optimisation), we work to make sure these systems understand your products, collections and brand correctly, and recommend them.
Which AI surfaces we target
Each one gathers information from different sources. What they have in common is a preference for clear, structured, trustworthy content.
ChatGPT
When it recommends products using web search, it looks for clear, comparable information.
Google AI Overviews
The summaries above search results, fed by strong pages in Google's index.
Perplexity
Cites its sources, so clear, quotable content stands out.
Gemini
Draws on data and structured information across Google's ecosystem.
How a product description changes
Before
A description AI can't make sense of
- "A stunning chandelier that adds elegance to your home with its unique design"
- Dimensions, materials and bulb details only shown in images
- No indication of who it's for or which room it suits
- No FAQs
After
A clear, quotable description
- The first sentence says exactly what it is: material, size, light type
- Which rooms and ceiling heights it suits
- Specifications as a text table
- Short product Q&A, marked up with FAQ structured data

Turning product questions into structured data
We store product Q&A in metafields and output it as FAQPage structured data. The same information is readable by both visitors and AI systems.
{%- assign faqs = product.metafields.custom.faq.value -%}{%- if faqs -%}<script type="application/ld+json">{ "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "FAQPage", "mainEntity": [ {%- for item in faqs -%} { "@type": "Question", "name": {{ item.question | json }}, "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": {{ item.answer | json }} } }{% unless forloop.last %},{% endunless %} {%- endfor -%} ]}</script>{%- endif -%}GEO doesn't replace SEO
Most AI answers draw on pages that already perform well in search engines. That's why we build GEO on a solid SEO foundation and run both from the same content plan.
- A clear heading hierarchy
- Copy without needless keyword repetition
- One clear answer to one question on each page
- Consistent brand mentions on external sources
What we keep in mind
GEO is a new field, so realistic expectations matter.
- 01AI answers vary by person and over time, so no one can guarantee a place in a specific answer.
- 02Product details that only exist in images can't be read by these systems.
- 03The same description repeated across hundreds of products reduces trust.
- 04Unclear returns and shipping policies make your brand less likely to be recommended.
