Your theme decides how your store looks and much of how it works: page layouts, filters, product page features and speed. There are good free options, a large range of paid themes and custom builds. Here's how they compare and how to choose.
Shopify's free themes
Shopify's own themes are free, fast and regularly updated.
- Horizon family: launched in 2025, a set of ten free themes (Horizon, Atelier, Dwell, Fabric, Heritage, Pitch, Ritual, Savor, Tinker and Vessel) built on theme blocks, which give more layout flexibility in the theme editor.
- Dawn and its related themes: still maintained, lean and widely used, and a solid base for custom development.
For a new store with a modest catalogue, a free Shopify theme is often the best start.
Paid Theme Store themes
Paid themes from independent designers on the Shopify Theme Store are a one-off purchase licensed to one store, and include updates and developer support. They often add features such as advanced mega menus, quick buy, lookbooks, size charts and richer product page layouts. Well-known examples include themes such as Impulse, Prestige, Broadcast and Palo Alto; there are many others aimed at specific industries.
Buy from the official Theme Store rather than third-party marketplaces: themes there are reviewed by Shopify and receive updates.
Custom themes
A custom theme, usually built on a free theme or from scratch, makes sense when you have specific design or functional needs, a strong brand identity, or a large catalogue with unusual structure. It costs more and you take on maintenance, but nothing is compromised. See our theme development service.
Comparison
| Free Shopify theme | Paid Theme Store theme | Custom theme | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | One-off licence | Development project |
| Speed | Excellent | Varies by theme | As good as it's built |
| Features | Core features | More built-in features | Exactly what you need |
| Updates | Shopify | Theme developer | You or your agency |
How to choose
- List must-have features for your catalogue: filters, variant display, size guides, bundles, mega menu.
- Look at demo stores on your phone, not only on desktop.
- Check speed of the demo and of live stores using the theme.
- Read reviews and update history for paid themes.
- Try it with your own products before publishing.
- Prefer fewer apps: a theme with built-in features you need can replace several apps.
Once chosen, see our guide to customising a Shopify theme.
Frequently asked questions
Is a free Shopify theme good enough?
For many stores, yes. Shopify's free themes are fast, well maintained and flexible. Paid themes add features and design options that can save customisation work.
Can I try a paid theme before buying?
Yes. Themes from the Shopify Theme Store can be previewed and added to your store to try before you pay. You only pay when you publish it.
Will changing theme affect my products or SEO?
Products, collections and content stay the same. Theme-specific settings and sections need rebuilding, and you should check titles, structured data and speed after switching.
