Most Shopify themes show a small "Powered by Shopify" link in the footer. It's harmless, but many brands prefer a cleaner footer with just their own name. You can remove it in a couple of minutes, with or without touching code.
Before you start: duplicate your live theme (Online Store → Themes → ⋯ → Duplicate) so you have a backup.
Method 1: Through theme content (no code)
- Go to Online Store → Themes.
- Next to your live theme, open the ⋯ menu and choose Edit default theme content.
- In the search box, type powered.
- Find the field whose text is "Powered by Shopify" (the label varies by theme).
- Replace the text with a single space. Leaving the field empty usually brings back the default text, so a space is the reliable way to hide it.
- Click Save and check the footer on your store.
If your store uses several languages, repeat this for each language in the language selector at the top of the page.
Method 2: In the footer code
Use this if Method 1 leaves an empty gap or a stray separator you want gone.
- Go to Online Store → Themes → ⋯ → Edit code.
- Open
sections/footer.liquid. In some themes the relevant code is in a snippet; search the theme forpowered_by_link. - Find
{{ powered_by_link }}. - Delete it, or wrap it in a Liquid comment so you can restore it later:
{% comment %}{{ powered_by_link }}{% endcomment %} - Save and check the store on desktop and mobile.
What to check afterwards
- The footer still shows your copyright line and policy links
- No stray separators or empty space are left behind
- Other languages are updated too, if you use them
- After any theme update, the change is still in place
Also worth checking: the password page
While your store is password-protected before launch, the password page may also show a Shopify mention. You can edit it in the theme editor by choosing the password page template.

Frequently asked questions
Is it allowed to remove "Powered by Shopify"?
Yes. The link is part of the theme, and you are free to remove it. It does not affect your plan or how the store works.
Will removing it affect SEO?
No. It's a single outbound link in the footer; removing it has no meaningful effect on search performance.
The text came back after a theme update. Why?
If you edited the theme code, updating to a new version of the theme can restore the original footer. Repeat the change on the new version, or use the theme content method.
