Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is about being the source an AI assistant uses and cites. Here is what that means for a Shopify store, and the practical steps that make a difference.

Shopify GEO: How to Get Your Store Seen in AI Search

More and more shoppers start with a question rather than a search: "what's a good running shoe for flat feet under $150?" or "which Shopify app should I use for subscriptions?". Assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews answer with a short summary and a handful of sources. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the work of making your store one of those sources.

How AI assistants choose what to show

No assistant publishes its full method, but the broad pattern is well understood. When an answer needs current information, the assistant runs searches, reads a set of pages and writes a summary based on them. Pages are more likely to be used when they:

  • can be crawled and rendered without trouble;
  • answer the question directly, in plain language, near the top;
  • contain specific, checkable facts such as dimensions, materials, prices, compatibility and policies;
  • agree with what other trustworthy sources say about the brand or product;
  • come from a site that is clearly a real business, with an about page, contact details and policies.

In other words, the basics of good SEO still carry most of the weight. GEO shifts the emphasis towards clarity and verifiable detail.

Practical GEO steps for a Shopify store

1. Make product pages answer real questions

Write product descriptions that state the facts an assistant would need to recommend the product: who it is for, what it is made of, sizes and fit, compatibility, care, and what's in the box. Put the most important facts in the first lines, not at the end of a long story. Our guide to writing product descriptions goes into detail.

2. Use structured data properly

Most modern Shopify themes output Product structured data with price and availability. Check that it is valid with Google's Rich Results Test, and add what's missing: brand, GTIN or MPN where you have them, reviews if you collect them, and Organization data on the home page. Structured data won't guarantee a mention, but it removes ambiguity.

3. Add an FAQ where questions genuinely come up

Questions from customer emails, chats and returns make the best FAQ content. Answer each one in two or three sentences that make sense on their own. Short, self-contained answers are exactly the kind of passage assistants quote.

4. Be consistent about who you are

Your brand name, address, contact details, shipping and returns terms should be the same on your store, your Google Business Profile, marketplaces and social profiles. Contradictions make it harder for an assistant to state anything about you with confidence.

5. Publish content that earns citations

Buying guides, comparisons, size charts and how-to articles get cited far more often than generic category text. Write them from real experience with your products, include specifics, and keep them up to date.

6. Keep the technical side clean

  • Don't hide key content behind tabs that only load on click or behind scripts that crawlers can't run.
  • Keep the store fast; see our Shopify speed guide.
  • Check your robots.txt rules so the crawlers you want can reach your pages.
  • Consider an llms.txt file that points assistants to your most important pages. It is a young convention and not every assistant uses it, but it does no harm.

How to tell whether it's working

Set up a segment in GA4 for referrals from assistant domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com, and watch the trend over months rather than days. Keep a short list of the questions your customers really ask, and check every few weeks how assistants answer them and whether your store appears. Because answers vary between sessions, look for patterns rather than single results.

Where to start

If you only do three things this month: rewrite the descriptions of your ten best-selling products so the key facts come first, add a short FAQ to each from real customer questions, and validate your structured data. If you'd like help with a fuller plan, see our Shopify GEO service or request a free store audit.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO different from SEO?

GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Most AI assistants draw on pages that search engines can already crawl and understand. GEO adds a focus on clear, quotable answers, consistent facts about your brand and structured product data, so an assistant can use your page as a source.

Can I see how much traffic comes from AI assistants?

Partly. Visits that arrive by clicking a link in an AI assistant often show the assistant's domain as the referrer, so you can segment them in GA4 or Shopify's reports. Answers that mention you without a click can't be measured directly, so it's worth checking your key questions in the assistants themselves from time to time.

Should I block AI crawlers in robots.txt?

That is a business decision. Blocking the crawlers that power AI search makes it less likely your pages are used as sources. Many stores allow search-related crawlers while making their own decision about crawlers used only for model training.

Does Shopify do anything for GEO automatically?

Shopify gives you a crawlable store, a sitemap, canonical tags and basic product structured data in most themes. The content itself (clear product facts, useful answers, policies and brand information) is still up to you.
