If your ad platforms show fewer sales than Shopify does, start with the thank you page. On 26 August 2026, Shopify moved every non-Plus store to the new Thank you and Order status pages, and any code pasted into Additional scripts stopped running. There's no error message, so many stores only notice when their reports go quiet in the middle of a campaign.
This guide explains what changed, how to check whether your tracking is affected, and how to set up GA4, Google Ads and Meta tracking on the new pages.
What changed
For years, purchase tracking on Shopify often worked like this: a Google Ads conversion tag, a Meta pixel or an affiliate script was pasted into Settings > Checkout > Order status page > Additional scripts, and it fired when the customer reached the thank you page.
Shopify retired that method in stages:
- 28 August 2025: deadline for Shopify Plus stores. On the same day, the Additional scripts section became view-only on all plans, so no new code could be added.
- 26 August 2026: deadline for Basic, Grow and Advanced stores. Stores that hadn't upgraded were moved to the new pages automatically.
The new Thank you and Order status pages don't run Additional scripts, checkout.liquid or apps that use script tags. The checkout form itself, where customers enter their address and payment details, wasn't affected. Only the post-purchase pages changed.
A three-minute check
- Check your version. In Settings > Checkout, look at the Configurations section. If an upgrade notice still appears, you're on the deprecated pages. If there's no notice and the Additional scripts box is gone or greyed out, you're on the new ones.
- Look at what was in Additional scripts. Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, Pinterest, affiliate networks, post-purchase surveys: none of that code runs on the thank you page any more.
- Compare numbers. Pick the last two weeks and put Shopify's order count next to GA4 purchase events and Google Ads conversions. If a gap opened on a specific day, usually the upgrade date, that's your answer.
If a Google Ads or GA4 conversion is defined by the thank you page URL, check it too: the new page may not match the old rule. Event-based tracking, described below, is more reliable than URL-based goals.
How to track purchases on the new pages
Shopify's upgrade guide points tracking and analytics to app pixels or web pixels, and visual page changes to blocks. In practice you have three options.
1. Official channel apps (recommended)
- Google & YouTube app: sends GA4 and Google Ads conversion events through Shopify's customer events. Connect your Google account, choose the GA4 property and Google Ads account, and turn on conversion tracking.
- Facebook & Instagram app: manages the Meta pixel and server-side events (Conversions API). You choose the data-sharing level inside the app.
- TikTok, Pinterest and Snapchat also have official Shopify apps that work the same way.
These apps respect the customer's cookie choice and send Shopify's standard events (page view, add to cart, checkout started, purchase) for you. No code required.
2. Custom pixels (for tools without an official app)
Affiliate networks, regional ad platforms or your own analytics tool go into a custom pixel:
- Go to Settings > Customer events.
- Click Add custom pixel and give it a name.
- Paste the tool's code plus a subscription to the purchase event, which is called
checkout_completed. - Click Save, then Connect. Nothing is sent until the pixel shows as connected.
A basic skeleton:
analytics.subscribe('checkout_completed', (event) => {
const order = event.data.checkout;
// call the tool's purchase function here,
// reading order number, value and currency from order
});
Custom pixels run in a sandbox and can't read the page's HTML. Liquid variables from your old snippet, such as {{ order.total_price }}, won't work here; read the values from event.data instead.
3. Google Tag Manager
You can also load GTM as a custom pixel and push checkout_completed into the dataLayer. It's flexible, but it's also where double counting usually starts. If the same Google Ads conversion is sent by both the Google & YouTube app and GTM, every sale is counted twice.
Visible elements on the thank you page
Surveys, discount codes, WhatsApp buttons or tracking links that were added the old way have also disappeared. On the new pages they're added as app blocks in the checkout editor. Check that the app you use has a version compatible with the new pages.
How to test
- Place a real test order on your own store, using a low-priced product or a test payment method.
- GA4: in Reports > Realtime, confirm a purchase event arrives with a transaction ID and value.
- Google Ads: check the conversion's status under Goals > Conversions. New data can take a few hours.
- Meta: in Events Manager, use the Test events tab to confirm the Purchase event.
- After a few days, compare Shopify's order count with each platform again. Don't expect an exact match (cookie refusals and ad blockers create a gap), but there shouldn't be a sudden large hole.
Common mistakes
- Double counting: app pixel, custom pixel and GTM all sending the same purchase.
- Pixel not connected: the custom pixel is saved but never connected.
- Old variables: Liquid variables copied into a custom pixel, so value and order ID arrive empty.
- URL-based goals: conversions still defined by the old thank you page URL.
- Consent mismatch: pixel privacy settings don't match the store's cookie banner, so events don't fire even for visitors who accepted.
Summary
Additional scripts are gone, but tracking isn't. Use the official apps for Google and Meta, custom pixels under customer events for everything else, send each platform's purchase from one place only, and confirm it with a test order. For GA4 basics, see our Google Analytics 4 for Shopify guide; for the ads side, see Google Ads for Shopify.
If you'd rather have it done and verified, our Shopify Google Analytics setup service covers GA4, Google Ads and Meta tracking together, including test orders.

Frequently asked questions
Why did my Additional scripts stop working?
Shopify upgraded the Thank you and Order status pages on non-Plus stores on 26 August 2026. The new pages don't run Additional scripts, checkout.liquid or apps that rely on script tags. Shopify Plus stores went through the same change on 28 August 2025.
How do I know if my store has been upgraded?
Go to Settings > Checkout and look at the Configurations section. If an upgrade notice is still showing, you're on the old version. If there's no notice and the Additional scripts box is missing or greyed out, you're on the new pages.
What should I use instead?
Use the Google & YouTube app for GA4 and Google Ads, and the Facebook & Instagram app for Meta; both run as app pixels. For tools without an official app, add a custom pixel under Settings > Customer events and subscribe to the checkout_completed event.
Why are purchases now counted twice?
Usually because the same platform receives the purchase event from more than one source, for example an app pixel plus a custom pixel or a second tag in Google Tag Manager. Send each platform's purchase event from one place only.
