Google is where people go when they already know what they're looking for. For online stores, that makes Google Ads, and especially Shopping ads with product images and prices, one of the most direct sales channels. Here's how to set it up properly and spend wisely.
1. Connect Shopify to Google
- Install the Google & YouTube app in Shopify.
- Connect your Google account, Merchant Center account and Google Ads account.
- Sync products to Merchant Center and fix any issues it reports.
- Set up conversion tracking through the app so purchases are measured, including from checkout.
- Link GA4 and Google Ads (GA4 setup).
Free product listings start working as soon as products are approved in Merchant Center. See our Merchant Center integration service.
2. Get the product feed right
Shopping performance depends heavily on feed quality:
- clear titles with brand, product type and key attributes such as colour, size or material;
- high-quality images on a clean background;
- GTINs where products have them, plus brand;
- accurate price, availability, shipping and returns information.
3. Choose campaign types
| Campaign | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Max | Automated ads across Shopping, Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail and Discover | Most stores with good data and conversion tracking |
| Standard Shopping | Product ads with more control over bids and search terms | Controlling spend by product, testing |
| Search | Text ads on search results | Brand searches, specific high-intent terms |
| Demand Gen / YouTube | Visual and video ads | Reaching new audiences |
4. Structure and budget
- Start simple: one Performance Max or Shopping campaign, plus brand search.
- Group products by margin or performance when you have enough data.
- Set targets (ROAS or CPA) based on your real margins.
- Give campaigns time to learn before judging them.
5. Measure correctly
- Check that only one purchase conversion is set as primary, to avoid double counting.
- Compare results with Shopify's sales by channel.
- Look at profit, not just revenue.
6. Landing pages
Shopping ads land on product pages, so those pages need to load fast and convert: clear photos, price, delivery and reviews. See our guide to increasing sales.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Google Ads to appear in Google Shopping?
No. Products in Merchant Center can appear in free listings across Google. Ads give you more visibility and placements.
Performance Max or Standard Shopping?
Performance Max uses all Google channels and automation; Standard Shopping gives more control over products and search terms. Many stores test both, or start with one and add the other.
Why are my products disapproved in Merchant Center?
Common causes are missing GTINs or brand, price or availability mismatches with the store, policy issues, or missing shipping and returns information. Merchant Center shows the reason for each product.
