"What should I sell?" is the question that stops most people from starting. The answer rarely comes from a list of trending products. It comes from combining what you know, what people already want, and what you can sell at a profit. Here's a method that works.
Step 1: Start from your advantages
Write down:
- what you know a lot about (a sport, a craft, an industry, a culture);
- problems you've had that products could solve;
- access you have: a producer, a supplier, a skill, a community;
- what you'd enjoy talking about every day.
The best ideas often sit where two of these overlap.
Step 2: Generate product ideas
- Browse marketplace best-seller lists and "frequently bought together" sections in your area.
- Read negative reviews of popular products. What do people wish were better?
- Look at forums, groups and comments in your niche for recurring questions.
- Check rising searches in Google Trends.
Step 3: Score each idea
| Question | Good sign |
|---|---|
| Is there steady demand? | Consistent search interest over several years |
| Can you be different? | A clear angle: quality, design, audience, bundle |
| Is the margin healthy? | Room for fees, shipping, returns and marketing |
| Is it easy to ship? | Small, light, not fragile |
| Will people buy again? | Consumables, accessories, collections |
| Can you reach buyers? | You know where they spend time online |
| Are there rules? | Few regulations, or ones you can meet |

Step 4: Do the maths
For each finalist, calculate profit per order: selling price minus product cost, packaging, shipping, payment fees, an allowance for returns and the advertising cost to win an order. Our profit calculator helps.
Step 5: Test before committing
- Order samples and judge quality yourself.
- Start with a small batch, pre-orders or a dropshipped test range (dropshipping guide).
- Run a small ad test to a simple product page and measure interest.
- Ask people in your target audience for honest feedback.
Step 6: Launch focused
Launch one clear product range for one clear audience. Learn what sells, then expand into related products. That's how most successful stores grow.

Frequently asked questions
Should I sell something I'm passionate about?
Passion helps you create better content and keep going, but it isn't enough on its own. The product also needs demand, margin and a way to reach buyers.
How many products should I launch with?
Enough to look like a real store and give choice, often somewhere between a handful and a few dozen, depending on the category. A focused range is easier to market.
Physical, digital or services?
Physical products need stock and shipping; digital products need none but face copying; services don't scale as easily. Many stores combine a core physical range with digital extras.
