How to Start Selling Online: A Beginner's Roadmap

Selling online is more accessible than ever: you can set up a professional store in days and reach customers anywhere. What decides success is getting a few fundamentals right in the right order. This roadmap takes you from idea to first orders.

1. Decide what to sell

Start with a focused range for a clear audience, with enough margin to pay for marketing. Our guide to what to sell online walks through the method.

2. Choose your channels

  • Your own store: full control of brand, pricing and customer relationships.
  • Marketplaces: built-in traffic, higher fees and less control (comparison).
  • Social media: discovery and community (selling on social).

Most brands build their own store as the base and add other channels around it.

3. Set up your store

A hosted platform such as Shopify handles hosting, security and checkout, so you can focus on products and customers. The essentials:

  • a domain name and a clean theme;
  • products with good photos and useful descriptions;
  • payments, shipping rates and tax settings;
  • policies: shipping, returns, privacy, terms;
  • about and contact pages.

Our step-by-step guide: how to set up a Shopify store. For costs, see Shopify pricing.

4. Payments and shipping

  • Offer cards plus the wallets your customers use, and local methods where relevant.
  • Choose carriers and rates; consider free shipping above a threshold.
  • Decide how you'll pack and how quickly you'll ship.
  • Business registration and tax rules where you are based
  • Consumer rights in the countries you sell to, such as cancellation periods
  • Privacy and cookie consent requirements
  • Product-specific rules: labelling, safety, age restrictions

6. Get your first customers

  1. Tell your network and existing followers.
  2. Collect email addresses from day one.
  3. Post useful content where your audience spends time.
  4. Run a small ad test to learn which products and messages work.
  5. Set up the basics of SEO so search traffic can build over time (SEO checklist).

7. Measure and improve

Watch conversion rate, average order value and where visitors come from. Fix the biggest drop-off first. Our guide to increasing sales has a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a registered business to sell online?

It depends on your country and how much you sell. Many countries require registration once you trade regularly. Check local rules for business registration and tax before you start.

How much does it cost to start an online store?

You can start with a platform plan, a domain and a free theme. The biggest variable is usually product stock and marketing. See our Shopify pricing guide for platform costs.

How long until I get my first sale?

It varies. Stores that start with friends, family, existing followers and a small ad test usually see first orders sooner than those relying on search traffic, which takes time.
